Health Promotion Among Diverse Populations Marcia Maris Grand Canyon University NRS-429v November 14, 2015 The purpose of this paper is to discuss the health status of the American Indian/ Alaskan Native (AI/AN). A comparison and contrast of AI/ANs with the national average regarding the health status such as heart disease and strokes will be presented. Multifactorial barriers limiting health, and the overall factors affecting health within this population are identified. Current health status will be presented including health promotion and disparities among this US population. Primary, secondary, and tertiary health promotions will be discussed along with one approach to promoting health offered. According to the†¦show more content†¦In 2008, the death rates for infants was 53% higher for AI/AN women compared with non-Hispanic white women (Centers for Diseas Control, 2015). This is a significant disparity between these two populations. Good health is influenced by race, ethnicity, socioeconomic state, geographic locale, education, and lack of health insurance to name just a few (Healthy People, 2015). The comparison and contrast identified in previous paragraphs clearly presents the existing health disparity of AI/AN’s population. To promote better health the US department of health developed Healthy People 2020 with objectives to promoting healthy lives. Their goals are for people to live a long healthy life and remove disparities (Health People 2020, 2015). There are three levels of health promotion prevention: primary, secondary, and tertiary (Edelman amp; Mandle, 2014). Primary relates to preventing disease before it begins. Actions such as receiving an annual flu shot to prevent getting the flu, or eating healthy to prevent heart disease and weight control are included in primary prevention. Secondary prevention involves catching diseases early through screening. Some facilities will offer lung cancer screenings to catch the disease early to prevent worse outcomes. The third is tertiary which involves maintaining the best level of health possible with the disease or disability currently affecting a person.
